Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite - Paris !.

June 27, 2014

Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite - Paris !.
Part One - The Latin Quarter and 7th Arrondissement.

Paris of all the great cities, hardly needs introduction. For those of us yet to set foot in the city of lights,
it is a beacon of artistic, and literary endeavour, emanating from the cafes of the Left Bank after the wars.
No other city captures the 'romance' of Paris.

Modern Paris is a city of many layers, a cosmopolitan city at the forefront of fashion, design and the arts.
Artists, Musicians and writers still  visit, to be inspired with creative energy, not edgy, street-wise like London, but a more artisanal and flamboyant creativity.

The famous Hotels are lavish in their Empire spirit or extreme French minimalism. The best restaurants house talent of the most innovative chefs. Grand old fashion houses still line up on the Faubourg St-Honore and the
Champs-Elysees, all the new names around the Marais, the Bastille and Montmartre heaving with young designers and backroom ateliers, reinventing, revitalising. Paris is truly a city of the flaneur, an aimless wander brings rewards around every corner - an exquisite boutique, an enticing cafe.

The Latin Quarter -  is where Paris's first university was founded in the 12thc. Latin was the language of learning giving its name to an area focused on enlightenment.

Les Papilles - 30 Rue Gay Lussac, 5th
Wonderful little gourmet shop and restaurant.  Filled with luxury foods sourced from
around the country - and masses of well chosen wines !

Sadaharu Aoki - 56 Boulevard de Port Royal, 5th
The fine art of Japanese pastry-making, a treasure house of delights.
Artful delicacies set out in tight lines, carefully wearing stacked layers and twirls.

The 7th Arrondissement - has an historic, royal air some of the most costly spots in Paris, the 7th has luxe living, shopping and dining.  Fine townhouse with exquisite courtyard gardens. Prime Ministers residence and government residences. High end design and fashion shops round the rue de Bac.

Gustave Sennelier - 3 quai Voltaire 7th.
Opened his first paint shop in 1887, selling hand-ground pigments to artists
in Paris.  He invented the  metal paint tube, thus enabling the masters Picasso, Bonnard and Cezanne et al,
to work outside. An historic emporium of colour.

be boulangepicier - 73, boulevard de Courcelles 8th.

Golden loaves, sweet and savoury treats, eat in or take away, much more than a
traditional baguette shop ! Humble dough taken  to a higher plane.

Simple Interiors.

July 11, 2014

There needs to be balance with simple interiors, a balance not too utilitarian, but informal and above all calm. Variation of textures, wall coverings, flooring, upholstery and soft furnishings all play an important part when creating this modern interior theme. Interiors with a country rustic simplicity do not need a country home to enjoy. Painted wooden furniture, chairs with rush seats. Soft...
